The family of a Wellington driver fatally crushed while operating a glass collection truck will receive $85,000 in court-ordered reparations from Enviro Waste Services Limited (ESL).
The household refuse and recycling collection firm was sentenced in the Wellington District Court today after pleading guilty to charges under ss 18 (1)(a) and 50 (1)(a) of the Health and Safety in Employment Act. The company was also fined $56,250* and ordered to pay court costs.
The director of Waikato company Steelcon Construction Limited, Rodney Bishop, has been sentenced to four months home detention over the death of a worker who died after he was buried when a trench he was working in collapsed. SteelCon Construction was also fined $56,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $121,320.
Michael Haines, who was 34, died in May 2014. He was helping to install a concrete effluent transfer tank and pipes at a farm at Te Poi, Matamata at the time of the incident.
In a reserved decision released today, Prepared Produce Limited was fined $196,406.25 for six offences and ordered to pay $57,000 in reparation to three victims.

A female patron was seriously injured at the club in March 2015 after she fell three metres from an unguarded landing on an emergency stairway while attending a quiz night at the club’s bar.
The victim and several friends had gone out for a cigarette and used an emergency exit, and after stepping back to allow a friend to re-enter the building, the victim lost her footing and fell. She sustained serious injuries to the spine, shoulder and neck and also suffered mild traumatic brain injury.
